The Barge Canal Historic District extends 450 miles, over eighteen counties, and encompasses 23,000 acres. Constructed between 1905 and 1918, the system of waterways is the successor to New York's nineteenth century canals, including the Erie, the Champlain, the Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca.
